British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the global climate talks that Britain will host at the end of the month will be very difficult while issuing a final call to world leaders to take specific steps to protect the planet.
Johnson explained, in an interview with Bloomberg Agency of America, that the participants in the discussions, known as COP26, should keep the prospects of containing global warming to pre-industrial levels at 1.5 degrees Celsius, and called on countries to tighten their promises to reduce emissions.
Johnson noted that the talks have always been very difficult and there will be a need to see real action from the participants, and he urged countries to make strong commitments.
Johnson seeks to use the summit, which begins in Glasgow, Scotland, on October 31 and will continue until November 12, to show Britain’s leadership on the issue of climate change while formulating a new role for his country in the post-Brexit era. However, the ongoing Corona pandemic and high energy prices threaten to undermine the success of the talks.
While Britain expects to receive about 120 world leaders in Glasgow, it admits that some prominent people may not appear. China’s President Xi Jinping, whose country is the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, and Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro are expected to not participate.
