Following Britain, Canada announced the restriction of the entry of all travelers from southern Africa as concerns arises over the new “Omicron” variant of the coronavirus.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said anyone who has traveled through southern Africa in the last 14 days is being asked to quarantine now and to go for a COVID-19 test.

The countries include:

  • South Africa
  • Mozambique
  • Namibia
  • Zimbabwe
  • Botswana
  • Lesotho
  • Eswatini

Canadians and permanent residents of Canada returning from southern Africa must have a recent negative test of Covid-19 in order to return.

According to the transport minister Omar Alghabra, there are no direct flights from southern Africa to Canada.

The measures go into effect immediately and will be in place until Jan. 31, he said.

Health Minister Jean-Yves Duclos said that Canada will also issue a health advisory requesting Canadians not to visit southern Africa. She said that the health officials are continuously monitoring the new variant.

Theresa Tam, Canada’s chief public health officer, said the new variant “has a number of concerning features the significance of which is still being assessed.”

She said provincial labs across Canada have been alerted to the new Omicron variant and have “searched for possible detections. To date, there are no indications of the variant’s presence in Canada.”

Tam said Omicron “is considered unusual in that it has a very high number of mutations in two key areas of the virus’s spike protein.”

Early indications suggest it could be more transmissible and could affect “the body’s natural immunity as well as potentially reduce immunity offered by vaccines.”

That’s why “we are concerned about this new variant and are closely monitoring the evolving situation,” Tam said.
