Breaking: Helicopter carrying Indian Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat, wife crashes in Tamil Nadu

An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter with Indian Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat on board crashes near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu.

Sources indicated that there were 14 people on board including Gen Rawat, his wife, defence assistant, security commandos and an IAF pilot.

According to reports, at least three people have been confirmed dead in the crash, while three others have been rescued so far.

The three who have been rescued suffered serious injuries and have been taken to the hospital at Wellington cantonment in Nilgiris district.

The crash took place in the Nilgiris, shortly after the Mi-series chopper took off from the army base in Sulur. The chopper was heading to the Wellington defence establishment.

Indian Air Force has ordered an inquiry to ascertain the cause of the crash.
