NASA revealed its intention to launch a spacecraft in late November, whose mission will be to destroy two asteroids before they reach Earth.

NASA will send the DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft aboard the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, into an asteroid moon for planetary defense purposes

DART will be the first demonstration of kinetic impact technology, which involves sending one or more large, high-speed spacecraft into the path of an asteroid in space to change its destination,” NASA said in a statement.

NASA considers any object close to Earth a potential danger if it is within 0.05 astronomical units (4.6 million miles) and has a diameter of more than 460 feet.

According to NASA, there are approximately 25,000 known objects close to Earth, but there are more of them waiting to be discovered.

DART is part of NASA’s strategy to protect the Earth from the threat of asteroids and was designed in cooperation with the European Space Agency.
