The world number one dominates opponents from Spain who is also the second seed to win the 15th Grand Slam title in just two hours four minutes at Rod Laver Arena.

The trophy allows the 31-year-old to beat Roger Federer and Roy Emerson who won six Australian Open Championships for men’s singles.

Djokovic knelt and kissed the court after beating his biggest opponent.

“I just wanted to reflect on my journey back in the last 12 months,” Djokovic said with emotion.

“I was undergoing surgery 12 months ago,” he said, referring to his elbow surgery that forced him out of the world’s top 20 list but rose to win the Wimbledon and United States Open Championship.

“To stand in front of you all and succeed in achieving this title, it’s amazing, I’m missing words.”

The only final stage to find the two players in Australia was in 2012, which saw the Grand Slam history after five hours and 53 minutes.

The epic final which is again expected to come true does not materialize when Nadal appears to be struggling at the start of the game and the opportunity is fully utilized by Djokovic to gain momentum.

“Although tonight is not my best day but there’s a player who plays better than me,” Nadal said.

“I had a lot of difficult moments last year, though this is not today but it’s more important that I’m here after getting out of the injury.”
