Chinese government spokesman Lijian Zhao wrote on Twitter that the coronavirus may have originated in the United States and was brought to China by US Army.

Serious accusations that will cause discussion. “We need American officers to respect the facts – wrote Zhao -. Every minute wasted in libel and complaints would be better spent on improving domestic reactions and international cooperation.

In the tweet, the spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry asked some questions: “When did patient zero date in the United States? How many people are infected in the States? What are the hospitals where they are hospitalized called? It could be that it was the US military that brought the outbreak to Wuhan. We want transparency! Let your data be made public! The United States owes us an explanation!” Zhao wrote in English.

Shortly thereafter, a second tweet appeared in the official account of the Chinese spokesperson, in which Zhao added: “Some deaths from flu were actually infected by COVID -19, admitted Robert Redfield, spokesman, and representative of Parliament US. The United States has reported 34 million flu cases and 20,000 deaths. Please tell us at this point how many of these are connected to COVID-19? ”  – Zhao Tweeted

The video with Redfield’s intervention was also shared by other Chinese media, including the national CCTV broadcaster and the Global Times tabloid.

Speaking of Zhao’s tweet, Geng Shuang, another spokesman for the Beijing Foreign Ministry, said that there are “different opinions” on the origin of the virus in the international community and that “China regards that question as scientific, which should be dealt with in a professional way“, but avoiding confirming if what is written on social media is the official position of the government.

Origins of the Conspiracy Theory

Many in China are launching a campaign to question the origin of the coronavirus that has infected over 125,000 people around the world. The first cases of infection were reported in Wuhan and there were more infections and deaths than anywhere else on the planet. On March 4, Zhao Lijian, speaking officially, told reporters that “a conclusion on the origin of the virus has not yet been reached” and Chinese scientists are working to identify it.

Besides, on February 27, the Chinese infectious disease expert Zhong Nanshan also questioned the origin of the coronavirus: “The infection was first identified in China but the virus may not have originated in China” he said at a press conference.

Yesterday, Thursday 12 March, Hua Chunying, head of the Information Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, sharing Redfield’s words, said that “it is absolutely wrong and inappropriate to call it the Chinese coronavirus”.

However, an answer to this question can only be given by science.
