Deaths from a major blast from gas plant in central China rose to 15, while five more were confirmed missing, an official media agency reported Saturday.

The explosion yesterday at Henan Coal Gas Group’s gas plant caused 19 people injured and other large injuries suffered minor injuries, CCTV local broadcasting stations said.

It also caused debris of windows and building doors to float up to a distance of three kilometers.

According to CCTV, the explosion occurred in the factory air separation unit and all injured were rushed to the hospital for further treatment.

Following the incident, all production at the plant was suspended.

“Many windows and doors are located within a three-kilometer radius and even some doors inside are also experiencing similar consequences,” CCTV said through Weibo’s social media account.

The local media displayed amateur videos showing a thick black smoke rising from the gas plant, with scattered debris on the street.

Deadly blasts often occur in China following weaknesses in safety.

The local environmental protection department said some wastewater from the blast and firefighting has flowed into the local river. The Yima municipal government said it was building a barrier to stop the contaminated water from heading downstream.
