Chinese defense officials on Monday warned their US counterparts against “flexing muscles” in the disputed South China Sea after meeting US Defense Secretary Mark Esper, media sources said.

Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Colonel Wu Qian said the South China Sea dispute area is one of several issues Esper discussed with his Chinese counterpart General Wei Feng during their meeting earlier in the day, the US newspaper The Hill reported on its website.

The Chinese side urged its US counterpart to stop “flexing muscles” in the South China Sea, not provoke provocations and escalate tensions in the region, Wu said.

It is noteworthy that Beijing has long declared that the Southern Sea is part of its territorial sovereignty, amid demands from other countries in the region to be entitled to it, and Washington has marched ships at sea deemed Chinese government prohibited; according to press sources.
