The State of Michigan will pay a million and a half million dollars to Richard Phillips, who has spent 46 years in jail for a murder he did not commit, the Office of the Attorney General said on Tuesday.

The innocent American was jailed in 1971 and was released only last spring and paid nothing more than what he paid for, even the value of the bus ticket he took home.

One year after his release, the Office of the Attorney General decided to compensate him for the years in which he had been held in liberty, valuing those years at $ 1.5 million, while a decision to allocate that amount was now pending.

According to a report, during his time in prison, Phillips completed a painting that is now worth thousands of dollars.

According to the Phillips, he tried in this way “to be distracted by something and to occupy his head,” and he does not care whether the authorities will pay him for something wrong.
