United States expelled two Chinese diplomats in October on suspected espionage. The two men are said to have gained access to a military base in the state of Virginia in the presence of their women in September, which also houses special forces, the New York Times reported on Sunday, citing six people familiar with the matter. US  government officials therefore believe that at least one of the embassy staff was a member of the Chinese Secret Service.

“If the incident is confirmed, it would be the first expulsion of Chinese diplomats on suspicion of espionage for more than 30 years”

Since the group was unable to show an entry permit, the group was asked to move through the driveway and turn around there immediately, as the “New York Times” reported. Instead of leaving the military base, the four continued on. After firefighters blocked them, they indicated that they did not understand the security guard’s instructions in English and got lost.

The motive of the attempted intrusion was not clear. However, there is a suspicion that the security measures should be tested. Initially, there was no response to a request from the State Department in Washington.

The paper also points out that neither the US State Department nor the FBI wanted to comment on the incident. When asked by the Chinese State Department and the Embassy in Washington, there was no response.

If the incident is confirmed, it would be the first expulsion of Chinese diplomats on suspicion of espionage for more than 30 years, according to the newspaper.

“Tense relations between Washington and Beijing”

The relationship between the United States and China is tense. For around a year and a half, the two countries have had a trade conflict that eased at least somewhat on Friday following an agreement on a partial agreement.

However, laws passed by Congress to support the democracy movement in Hong Kong sparked outrage in Beijing. The US government’s harsh criticism of the treatment of the Uighurs in Xinjiang Province also sees China’s leadership as an undesirable interference in internal affairs.
