Certain things that cannot be bought. And this is – as cheesy as that sounds – probably the love. This obviously also applies to the richest man in the world and his wife. The CEO of giant portal Amazon Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Bezos announced on Twitter on Wednesday, they divorce after 25 years of marriage.

“We have had such a great life together as a married couple and we look forward to a wonderful future as parents, friends, partners in companies and projects,” the statement said, suggesting a mutual separation. If they had known then that they would split up after 25 years, they would do the same thing again, they write. “We remain a family and we remain esteemed friends.” According to the statement, friends and family have long been aware of the divorce.

Who gets the money?

Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos met in 1992. Jeff Bezos was working in New York for the hedge fund DE Shaw. MacKenzie Tuttle, as she was then, came to work as an employee. In 1993, the couple married, a year before Jeff Bezos founded Amazon .com. The couple has four children: three sons and one adopted daughter from China.

According to Forbes magazine, Jeff Bezos is the richest person in the world. His fortune was last estimated at about 120 billion euros. Divorce is governed by the law of the state of Washington. There, the entire wealth generated during a marriage is evenly distributed among the couple if it cannot agree otherwise. Jeff Bezos could lose the title as the richest person in the world, while his wife could become the richest woman in the world.

MacKenzie Bezos studied English at the elite Princeton University. One of her professors was the Nobel laureate Toni Morrison. She says about Bezos that she was one of the best students she ever had in her class. In 2005, Bezos published her first and so far, only book as a writer: The Testing of Luther Albright. MacKenzie Bezos is credited with an important role in Amazon’s success.

In 2014 the couple Bezos founded the organization Bystander Revolution, which translates into onlooker revolution. The organization works against mobbing and provides advice on how to prevent individual bullying situations on its website.

When Jeff Bezos lived in New York in the 1990s, he said he was very systematically looking for women and arranging for friends to arrange dates. He was looking for a woman who could save him from a prison in a Third World country, he once said. This rescue he should now be able to buy.
