The British Parliament President John Bercow announced his resignation at the last session of the lower house before the forced break. The 56-year-old Conservative said he would not stand for office again if MPs vote on Monday for early elections. But even in the case of a rejection of early elections, he will resign on 31 October. In addition, he also wanted to give up his parliamentary mandate.

That Johnson swings in, is considered as good as excluded. He wants to lead Britain out of the EU under all circumstances on 31 October – if necessary without an agreement with Brussels. However, most of the MPs are against an unregulated exit from the EU.

Bercow has been sitting in Parliament for the constituency of Buckingham since 1997 and has been with the lower house for ten years. The fact that he became “Speaker” of the house, he owed primarily not his party friends, but a complicated election process and the Labor Party, which he was politically close despite his membership in the Tories in the era Blair and Brown. So close that it was occasionally speculated about a change of party.

Most recently, he was confirmed in office in 2017. In the past few months Bercow has become known around the world in the wake of the many sensational meetings of the UK Parliament over its withdrawal from the EU. John Bercow was particularly alarmed in March when he downed the Brexit strategy of former Prime Minister Theresa May with a rule from the 17th century

During his term of office, John Bercow widely interpreted the usually unimportant role of the Speaker of Parliament. He said on Monday: “During my time as a spokesman, I tried to increase the relative authority of this Parliament, which I will absolutely never apologize to anyone, nowhere, at no time”. For him, the function was “the greatest privilege and the greatest privilege the greatest honor of his professional life”. He would be eternally grateful for that.
