The President of Ecuador, Lenin Moreno, announced that Venezuelan citizens will need visas to cross the border of the country.

The Ecuadorian presidency said in a statement on Friday that it was part of the security plan for immigrants, which calls for tightening security measures.

The statement said that the Venezuelan citizens who arrived in the country and did not commit any legal violations will also be settled.

Prior to that, Venezuelan citizens could enter Ecuador without visas, where regular ID cards were sufficient to enter the country.

Venezuela’s economic and political crisis has displaced more than 4 million people, mostly to neighboring countries such as Colombia, Brazil and Ecuador. The latter hosts some 320,000 Venezuelan immigrants and expects to increase by half a million by the end of this year.
