Facebook is preparing to hide the number of “Likes” in an attempt to maintain the mental health of its users, and the company confirmed that it is preparing the feature after the  researcher and engineer Jane Manchun Wong discovered a prototype code of the feature hidden inside the Android application on Facebook.

Although the feature is not yet available to any Facebook user, the test is likely to be similar to what happened within the Instagram application, where a similar test was conducted last month in Canada, Japan, Ireland, Italy, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand, which give users the ability to see a list of likes on their own posts, but they can’t see how many others have shared.

The platform says it is part of an effort to make users feel happier amid fears that social media could contribute to low self-esteem and feelings of inappropriate youth.
