French president's adviser will meet Iranian leadership in an attempt to ease tensions

France’s top diplomatic adviser to President Emmanuel Macaron, will travel Iran on Tuesday and Wednesday to try to stem tensions between Tehran and the United States, an official said Monday.

On Monday, Iran threatened to restart centrifuges suspended from work and increase the purity of uranium enrichment to 20 percent as part of its next major steps of a reduction in its commitments to the nuclear deal that Washington pulled out last year.

The French official said Iran and the United States were keen to increase pressure on each other at this stage but both sides would need to start talks in the end.

“The important thing in ongoing ctises is to find middle points that take us from extreme tensions to negotiation and that’s what we’re trying to do.” said an official
