Germany rejected the Russian decision to ban 8 European officials from entering Russian territory, in response to European Union sanctions against Russian citizens.

A spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry said on Friday: “Contrary to the measures imposed by the European Union last March against Russian officials due to gross violations of human rights, there is no basis for the measures taken by Russia.”

He noted that the Russian actions “lead to more unnecessary tension in relations with Russia.”

Russia had announced the imposition of sanctions on 8 European officials, including the President of the European Parliament and the Attorney General in the German capital Berlin, in response to the sanctions imposed by the European Union on 6 Russian citizens last March, accusing Moscow of violating human rights.
