First batch of women entered and graduate in  NASA astronaut training program were Sally Reid, Anna Fisher, Judith Reznik, Kathryn Sullivan, Margaret Rea and Shannon Luchid in 1978.

According to NASA statistics, the number of women admitted to the program has risen dramatically, especially with the total number of aspiring astronauts. Rade became the first American woman in space after astronaut Valentina Tereshkova and Svetlana Savitskaya. Fisher is the first mother to fly in space, while Resnik died in a tragic accident in the 1986 Challenger explosion.

In 2013, the first, albeit small, group of astronauts was selected, with four men and four women to train as NASA astronauts.
