British Airways (BA) pilots began a two-day strike today, leaving nearly all the airline’s flights stranded and affecting thousands of passengers in payroll disputes.

The company is part of the International Airlines Group (IAG), it canceled 1,700 flights to and from Heathrow and Gatwick airports in London today and tomorrow, before the first strike of the British Airliners Association (BALPA).

“I’m sorry, the actions of the pilots’ union caused this. Because we try to reach our own goals, our customers are affected, brands are affected and our partners are affected”, British Airways Chief Executive Alex Cruz said.

IAG shares fell more than two percent, during early trading.

BA offers pilots an 11.5 percent pay raise for three years that will make the captain a top salary of 167,000 Pounds a year with an additional 16,000 Pounds as allowance.

BALPA wants payday deals to include profit sharing clauses.

“BA is making a profit, we want to share it as we share it at a difficult time”, said BALPA Secretary-General Brian Strutton.
