Narendra Modi opts out of G7 Summit

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs announced that the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, will not travel to the United Kingdom to attend the meetings of the Group of Seven, as India passes through the worst wave of the Coronavirus outbreak the world is currently witnessing.

“While we appreciate the Prime Minister’s invitation (Modi) by the UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to attend the G7 summit as a special invitee, based on the prevailing situation of covid, it has been decided that the prime minister will not attend the G7 summit in person” said Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi.

Even though India is not a member of the Group of Seven, Modi received an invitation from Johnson to attend the summit, which will be held from 11 to 13 June in Cornwall, United Kingdom.
