Iranian President Hasan Rouhani said on Wednesday he had discussed with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who is visiting Iran for economic ties and Tehran’s commitment to a nuclear deal signed in 2015 with world powers.

Iran and Tokyo will oppose nuclear weapons … Iran will never start a war but will respond in a devastating way to any aggression, “Rouhani told a joint news conference with Abe.

Abe is the first Japanese leader to visit Iran since the 1979 Islamic revolution and arrived in Tehran amid growing tension between Iran and the United States, which has raised fears of a new military conflict in the Middle East.

“Iran must play a constructive role in promoting peace and stability in the region and the armed conflicts in the Middle East must be stopped at all costs,” Abe said.
