Energy Minister of Saudi Arabia Khalid Al-Falih has been released from office as an appropriate arrangement of King Salman on Saturday evening, reported the Saudi state news agency SPA. Reasons for the step were not communicated.

Successor will Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest exporter of oil – and thus also an important member of the oil cartel OPEC. Al-Falih was present at the meetings with the 15 members and decided on possible funding cuts or increases.

In addition, he repeatedly appeared after attacks on oil pumping stations in Saudi Arabia – and warned that these were attacks on the global energy supply. For some time, Riyadh has gradually liberalized society.

In particular, the 33-year-old Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who was actually a strong man of the kingdom, was praised. He is considered the one who drives the social opening.

At the same time, however, the kingdom is cracking down on human rights defenders. The royal family is also under pressure because of the brutal murder in 2018 of the government-critical journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
