ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, has strict content policies in specific areas, for example, citing topics including Tiananmen Square and political criticism in China, according to a report in The Guardian.

But in other countries, the banned content has extended beyond what everyone expected, and ByteDance has since responded to clarify that the Guardian guidelines were “outdated” and updated after May 2019, and the company issued a statement saying it had changed those policies since then, However, all evidence indicates that oversight duties have been handed over to local governments or groups.

It seems that TikTok has become popular with users under the age of 30 in a direct position with the idea that sites like Facebook and YouTube have become a haven of freedom of expression.
