Former European Football Champion Heidi Mohr died at the age of 51 years after a serious illness. This was announced by the German Football Association (DFB) on Friday evening. Mohr succumbed to the fight against cancer.

“We will miss her very much,” said Hannelore Ratzeburg, DFB Vice President for women’s and girls’ football, according to the announcement. “I am deeply affected and very sad.

Heidi has made a great contribution to the success of women’s football, always being a modest, reserved and polite person. She never wanted a lot of fuss to be done about her, but she has always put herself in the service of the team. “

Mohr was considered a trailblazer of women’s football, was named about 20 years ago even “Europe’s footballer of the century”.

At the beginning of this year, the native of Weinheim was elected to the Hall of Fame of German women’s football. She is also in the founding of the DFB women.

“Heidi had an incredible scoring record and scored in almost every game, she was creative, explosive, a brilliant striker,” said Tina Theune. “She was humorous, a team player we could always rely on. I’m very sad.

“As assistant of national coach Gero Bisanz, Theune Mohr had accompanied for years. Together with former teammates of Heidi Mohr, especially goalkeeper Silke Rottenberg, she is planning a special memorial service for Mohr in the course of the year, who has struck 83 times in 104 international matches and scored the first goal in July 1991. Until 2005, she was the DFB’s record scorer before being replaced by Birgit Prinz.

In 1989, 1991 and 1995 Mohr was European champion with the German national team, 1995 she was with the DFB women second at the World Championships in Sweden.

In five consecutive seasons (1991 to 1995) she was also top scorer in the Bundesliga. She later brought in her career in 2000 with the 1st FFC Frankfurt and the DFB Cup.
