Australian citizens returning to their country from India face the possibility of a prison sentence of up to five years and fines after the government temporarily banned travel.
The Australian Ministry of Health said the decision was taken “based on the proportion of people in India who have contracted Covid-19 infection who are under quarantine.”
Earlier, Australia banned all flights from India.
It is estimated that there are 9,000 Australians in India, 600 of whom are classified as at risk.
This will be the first time that Australians have been criminalized for their return to their country.
