The United States believes Hamza bin Laden, the son of late Osama bin Laden and a prominent figure in the organization, has died, a US official said on Wednesday.

The official, who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, did not give any further details, especially when or where Hamza Bin Laden died.

US President Donald Trump earlier declined to comment on a NBC television report that the United States had intelligence report about Hamza’s death.

Separately, the White House declined to comment on an imminent announcement on the matter of junior bin laden.

Hamza bin Laden, believed to be 30, was next to his father in Afghanistan before the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States and spent time with him in Pakistan after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan, which prompted many senior Al Qaeda leaders to go there, according to the Brookings Institution.

Osama bin Laden was killed by US special forces raiding his compound in Pakistan in 2011. Hamza is believed to have been under house arrest in Iran at the time, and the documents found in the compound indicated that assistants were trying to reunite with his father.

Analysts say Hamza, provided by Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in a voice message in 2015, represents the voice of young people in an organization whose older leaders are struggling to attract militants from around the world who have fallen under the influence of the Islamic state.

In 2017, the US State Department classified Hamza Bin Laden as a global terrorist after he called for acts of terrorism in Western capitals and threatened revenge against the United States for killing his father. It also threatened to target Americans abroad and urged Saudi tribes to unite with Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to fight against Saudi Arabia.
