World Intellectual Property Index 2018 stated that the Eight of the top ten global patent applications are located in Asia and Japan’s Canon from 2013 to 2015, 24,006 took lead of patent families were applied, followed by Samsung Electronics (21,836) and China National Grid (21,635). Whereas, Huawei ranked seventh with 14,605 patents.

For Samsung, the largest share of patent families – patents acquired in several countries to protect the same invention – is related to computer technology, accounting for 26.1%, followed by digital communications (15.9%) and semiconductors (11.9%).

In addition, the WIPO report stated that eight of the top ten companies with the most family patents are located in Asia.

IBM of United States Ranked fifth, Germany’s Bosch Group ranked tenth, and only two non-Asian applicant companies in the top ten.
